How do give yourself a natural looking tan… without the sun!

Summer is all about feeling healthier, getting out and about and enjoying the sun.

Obviously, there are some serious repercussions to seeing too much of the sun and Australian sun is definately one of the harshest.

So to replace that sunkissed look many people turn to spray tans and self tanners. Below are a few pointers on how to apply your own self tan if you dare and if you don’t…how to prepare yourself for a spray tan. As well as what to do to lengthen and enhance your tan.

How to Do It so it looks natural

Step 1: Exfoliate

By removing all dead skin cells you’ll get a smoother application and finish of your tan.

Your tan should also last longer.

Great products to ensure a super smooth finish:

Dermalogica Buffing Cloth

Exfoliating Body Scrub

MD Face & Body Scrub

Priori Invigorating Face & Body Scrub

Step 2: Ensure hair removal has occurred

Whether you’re a seasoned waxer or prefer to shave, you want all traces of hair removed before self tan application.

Step 3: Moisturise Elbows, knees and heels

These are the three of the driest areas of the body. What this means to a self tan or spray tan is that these areas may show up darker if you don’t prepare them with a moisturiser . The moistuiser will help dilute the self tanner in these areas.

Step 4: Apply self tanner

  1. Apply with gloves to ensure the palms of your hands don’t end up orange.

  2. Always read instructions on the back of self tanners.

  3. It’s easiest beginning with your arms and legs and then moving onto the chest and tummy.

  4. Apply your self tanner in circular fashion all over the body.

  5. You may require a hand when you get to your back.

Excellent product for self tanning:

  • Naked Tan Self Tanner

  • Naked Tan Gradual Tan

Both of these products are made by the same company that created the 2 hour tan we do in salon so we all highly recommend these products.

Step 5: Remember Backs of Hands

Remove gloves. If you were gloveless then wash and dry your hands thoroughly to remove all traces of orange palms…always a dead giveaway! Apply self tanner to the back of one of your hands and with the back of the other rub the product so that it distrubutes evenly over both hands.

Step 6: Keep moisture in

A decent moisturiser will extend the life of your tan so that you dont have to redo this process anymore than necessary. Lather up with a superhydrating moisturiser daily. Your skin will be looking and feeling better than ever as a result of it!

Product recommendations for body moisturising with self tan:

Naked Tan Creme de la Creme

Ultrarich Body Moisturiser (Dermalogica)

The sensible way to detox

January will be all about this…

If anyone needs some guidance on detoxing the following article is a must read:

Detox Light

  • Melanie Haiken
  • August 4th 2010
  • Starlets dish about grapefruit juice fasts, but experts say such practices are unnecessary – and even damaging. “If you get no calories, no protein and nearly no vitamins, you put your body in a stressful situation, and your metabolism is altered,” says Dr. Nicole Kafka, a New York-based colon and rectal surgeon. “Instead of weight loss and detox, you get a reversal – your body slows down and holds onto fat and everything else.”

What you really want, experts say, is to give your body a vacation from stress pileup. “Most of us don’t treat our bodies very well. We’re just go-go-go,” says Dr. Erika Schwartz, a New York-based specialist in menopause and hormones. The new detox “light” is about giving our body a deep dose of the nutritional and physical relief it craves. Discovering what it feels like to follow a healthier regime just might inspire you to make some long-term changes.

    Here’s a step-by-step guide to a better detox.

    Cleanse the Liver

Our bodies carry a load of petrochemical and industrial toxins that we absorb from the environment, such as allergens from food, plants and mold, and internal toxins like bacteria, fungus and yeast, says Dr. Mark Hyman, a medical consultant and author of Ultrametabolism. “Our livers have a very effective system for removing garbage from the body, so what you want to do is help the liver along,” he says. The simplest way to do this: a diet of wholesome, unprocessed foods.

Dr. David Simon, a neurologist and the co-founder of the Carlsbad, California, Chopra Center, which advocates an Ayurvedic style of detoxification that originated in India, suggests temporarily bidding goodbye to sugar, wheat gluten, milk products and meat. Eat lots of green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits, which provide the antioxidants and other nutrients the liver needs to clear toxins from the body. “Simplify your diet to cooked vegetables and rice as much as possible and eat only the healthiest, most easily digested foods.”

    Cut out Stimulants

If skipping your morning cup of java is going to give you a blinding headache, then taper off gradually. But it’s a good idea to cut down on caffeine, alcohol and nicotine as much as possible, says Dr. Jay Sloop, a Yakima, Wash.-based physician who practices detox himself. “Too much caffeine or alcohol can actually cause harm to memory and sleep patterns,” says Sloop. “Eliminating them from the system goes a long way in helping your body function effectively and resume a normal sleep-wake cycle without artificial highs and lows.” A temporary break is a great way to give your body a breather.

    Drink Water

Eight to 10 glasses of water or other fluids a day during your detox is key to the “flushing” effects of this process, says Sloop. Focus on drinking water at the beginning of the day and between meals rather than with them. “When it comes to flushing out toxins, the least effective time to drink water is when the stomach is already full,” says Sloop. If too much water bores you to tears, you can add lemon or ginger – which is an Ayurvedic cleansing technique – or dilute fruit juice with water to avoid the high-sugar content of juice alone. Vegetable juice (as long as it’s low-sodium) is always beneficial, and green tea is useful for weaning yourself off coffee while adding antioxidants.

    Feed Your Body “Alkaline” Foods

Waste products from exposure to toxins “acidifiy” our bodies, according to nutritional experts like Dr. Cheryle Hart, an obstetrician and gynecologist, and a co-author of The Feel Good Diet. “This acidity ultimately causes disease and premature aging,” she says. For the most effective detox, Hart recommends following the 80/20 rule – making your diet 80 percent alkalinizing foods and beverages, such as fruits, veggies and nuts, and 20 percent acid-forming foods, such as meat and white sugar. An easy start is to substitute acid-forming black tea and soft drinks with alkalinizing ginseng, mint and raspberry teas.

    Take Breaks

“If following a detoxification regimen stops you from eating junk and cleanses your system, it’s good even if you only do it for 24 hours,” says Schwartz. The optimal period for a detox, experts say, is three to seven days.

Stay Stress-free “When our minds and bodies are stressed, there’s a direct physiological impact on our bodies that causes us to experience symptoms like fatigue, anxiety, pain, insomnia and bloating,” says Dr. Julie Taw, an internist and the director of The Center for Integrative Healing at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center in New Jersey. Taw suggests complementing physical detoxification with relaxation exercises like deep breathing, yoga and meditation so your mind feels as clear and clean as your body.

    New Year Resolutions!

Just pondering next years promises to myself and found the following article quite useful.

    Top 10 New Year Resolutions
New Year’s Eve has always been a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It’s a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make and resolve to follow through on those changes. Did your New Year resolutions make our top ten list?

    1) Spend More Time with Family & Friends
Recent polls conducted by General Nutrition Centers, Quicken, and others show that more than 50% of Australians vow to appreciate loved ones and spend more time with family and friends this year.

    2) Fit in Fitness
The evidence is in for fitness. Regular exercise has been associated with more health benefits than anything else known to man. Studies show that it reduces the risk of some cancers, increases longevity, helps achieve and maintain weight loss, enhances mood, lowers blood pressure, and even improves arthritis. In short, exercise keeps you healthy and makes you look and feel better.

    3) Tame the Bulge
Fifty-five percent of adults in Australia are overweight, so it is not surprising to find that weight loss is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions. Setting reasonable goals and staying focused are the two most important factors in sticking with a weight loss program, and the key to success for those millions of Australians who made a New Year’s commitment to shed extra pounds.

    4) Quit Smoking
If you have resolved to make this the year that you stamp out your smoking habit, over-the-counter availability of nicotine replacement therapy now provides easier access to proven quit-smoking aids. Even if you’ve tried to quit before and failed, don’t let it get you down. On average, smokers try about four times before they quit for good. Start enjoying the rest of your smoke-free life!

    5) Enjoy Life More
Given the hectic, stressful lifestyles of millions of Australians, it is no wonder that “enjoying life more” has become a popular resolution in recent years.

    6) Quit Drinking
While many people use the New Year as an incentive to finally stop drinking, most are not equipped to make such a drastic lifestyle change all at once. Many heavy drinkers fail to quit cold turkey but do much better when they taper gradually, or even learn to moderate their drinking. If you have decided that you want to stop drinking, there is a world of help and support available.

    7) Get Out of Debt
Was money a big source of stress in your life last year? Join the millions of Australians who have resolved to spend this year getting a handle on their finances. It’s a promise that will repay itself many times over in the year ahead.

    8) Learn Something New
Have you vowed to make this year the year to learn something new? Perhaps you are considering a career change, want to learn a new language, or just how to fix your computer? Whether you take a course or read a book, you’ll find education to be one of the easiest, most motivating New Year’s resolutions to keep. Challenge your mind in the coming year, and your horizons will expand.

    9) Help Others
A popular, non-selfish New Year’s resolution, volunteerism can take many forms. Whether you choose to spend time helping out at your local library, mentoring a child, or building a house, these nonprofit volunteer organizations could really use your help.

    10) Get Organized
On just about every New Year resolution top ten list, organization can be a very reasonable goal. Whether you want your home organized enough that you can invite someone over on a whim, or your office organized enough that you can find the stapler when you need it, these tips and links should get you started on the way to a more organized life.
